Dating back to 1791, the Township of Wilmot, located in Waterloo, was first settled by Mennonites and Amish in he early 1800s, followed by Catholics, Lutherans, and Anglicans after Huron Road was opened by The Canada Land Company in 1828. The groups came together to clear the land, build roads, mills, shops, churches, schools and villages, including the roads known today as Erb’s Road, Snyder’s Road and Bleams Road. It wasn’t until 1840 when Wilmot became part of the District of Wellington and today, the sitting wall at the Oasis in the Centre represents the foundation of the 1850 Wilmot Township Hall and strong community first built by those early settlers.
The Township’s location along the banks of the Nith River are what made it so popular amongst settlers and that’s still much of the attraction today. Within the Township you’ll find rolling farmland, quaint village and bustling towns.
With a current population of approximately 21,000 people, the area is often described as a “community of communities” thanks to the many parts that make up the whole of Wilmot. These communities include:
Baden
Haysville
Holland Mills
Mannheim
Josephsburg
New Dundee
New Hamburg
New Prussia
Petersburg
Philipsburg
Pinehill
Punkeydoodle’s Corners
Rosebank
St. Agatha
Shingletown
Waldau
This cohesive, vibrant and welcoming countryside community is set to evolve and grow as a community of caring people working together to build upon a sure foundation, as per the Township’s vision and mission.
