Close to the bustling city of Waterloo and all its tech jobs, Beechwood is one of the area’s older and desirable, upscale neighbourhoods. Established in the early 1970s, the neighbourhood features an assortment of large, beautiful, traditional homes built prior to the early 1980s on large lots complete with gorgeous, mature beech trees that offer plenty of privacy. One of the most popular areas of Waterloo, Beechwood caters to families with numerous recreation areas, childcare facilities, schools and parks. One end runs alongside the University of Waterloo on Westmount Road, and the other runs along Erbsville. Columbia Street and Erb Street enclose the area on two sides.

When the community of Beechwood was first established, this neighbourhood existed at the edge of town, overlooking farmer fields and crops, but since the 1970s, this perspective has changed as at the area has become surrounded by urban development. The neighbourhood is broken down into three distinct areas: Beechwood proper, or Old Beechwood, Upper Beechwood and West Beechwood, with the latter two developed in the ‘90s. The area is known for its friendly community, privacy, great location, well kept homes and manicured lawns.

For many, Beechwood offers a trip back in time where homes are architectural delights with large, spacious well maintained lawns, blooming gardens, tall trees that offer shady protection and long driveways. The neighbourhood has plentiful side streets and places for children to play. Families can enjoy all 320 hectares of this peaceful and private setting. Beechwood is home to six community pools and features recreational opportunities as tennis courts, parks, soccer fields, skating rinks, playgrounds and paved walking trails that meander among the neighbourhoods’ many trees and parks.

Given Beechwood’s central Waterloo location, many residents commute to the city with ease. The shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities available in Uptown Waterloo are a short drive away, as are both Conestoga Mall and The Boardwalk shopping centre. With Sir Wilfred Laurier and Waterloo universities close by, the area is ideal for students with many renting basement apartments in the homes. In fact, one end of the neighbourhood runs along the University of Waterloo along Westmount Road. Many professors and executives from these colleges live in the area.

Public school students in Beechwood can attend one of two K-6 schools available, Mary Johnston Public School or Keatsway Public School, both of which offer French immersion from grades 1-6.  Middle school students can attend Centennial Middle School. High school students are bussed to Waterloo Collegiate Institute. Catholic elementary and middle school students can ride buses to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School. Catholic high school students can ride buses to Resurrection Secondary Catholic School.
