shutterstock_60037694-resizedWhether you’re looking for a recreational property to rent or buy, it may be daunting to figure out exactly where you should start your search. Of course a real estate agent like myself is always happy to help, but if you’re looking for resources to start your own search, there are a number of websites that can help.

Ontario Cottage (http://www.ontariocottage.com/) provides ad space to cottage owners and operators to promote the sale or rental of vacation properties and real estate. This site is great because it provides the contact info of the owner/operator so you can get in touch with them directly with any questions you may have. As an added feature, Ontario Cottage lets you add your name to the site’ mailing list so you’ll be informed when new properties are listed.

Muskoka Cottages (http://www.muskoka-cottages.com/) is a similar site, providing companies, agents and private listings of properties. What makes this site different is that it’s area-specific, featuring only cottages, homes, properties and businesses for sale in Muskoka, Haliburton Highlands, Almaguin Highlands, Parry Sound and the Georgian Bay areas of Ontario. Fortunately, the properties are listed by area, allowing you to narrow your search and letting you view listings by real estate companies as well.

Cottage Ontario (http://www.cottageontario.com/), not to be confused with Ontario Cottage, lets buyers and sellers both take advantage of the site. Similar to the other options, the site provides listings of vacation properties and cottages across Ontario, and also includes an option to search by region.

ECottage Canada (http://www.ecottagecanada.com/) is a site where buyers and sellers get together to buy and sell cottages, waterfront lots, private islands, hobby farms, businesses, lodges and more. Though the site features nation-wide listings of Canada’s vacation lands, you do have the ability to search by Ontario only.

Resort Scape (http://www.resortscape.com/Canada_vacation_homes/Ontario) is a little bit different than the other sites. It allows real estate professionals to advertise vacation homes for sale in Ontario. The features on the site are fantastic, allowing the user to narrow their search by city, price, type, number of bedrooms, finished square feet, sale type and even the variety of nearby activities – perfect for recreational home searchers!
