Nestled in a peaceful valley on the Oak Ridges Moraine, the town of Uxbridge is high on the list of communities for residents seeking the serenity of country living within an hour of Toronto.

Settled in 1806 by Quakers from Pennsylvania, the Uxbridge Friends Meeting House for the Quaker community was built in 1820, and is a fine example of early architecture in the region. The public library was built in the late 1800s and was expanded in honour of the 1987 centennial. The Thomas Foster Memorial Temple, built in 1935 by a former Toronto mayor, is an architectural gem inspired by the the Taj Mahal. Some of the original industries to develop in the town were musical – the Gold Medal Radio and Phonograph Company and Uxbridge Piano and Organ Company.

Uxbridge’s 21,000 residents have included some Canadian legends. Glenn Gould, Canada’s most renowned pianist, has deep roots there, as his parents and grandparents lived and worked in the town. David Milne, an artist whose work is featured at the McMichael Art Gallery in Kleinburg, had his studio in Uxbridge in the 1940s. Lucy Maud Montgomery, the author of Anne of Green Gables, lived in Leaskdale just north of Uxbridge, and much of the outdoor footage for the TV series ‘Road to Avonlea’ based on her book was filmed in Uxbridge.
